the notion that news reports inform us about fucked up aspects of society so that we can be aware and prevent risk, is bullshit. Reading about gang crime won’t stop you getting assaulted by a gang. in fact, if you’re at risk of getting assaulted by a gang, you probably don’t read newspapers anyway. its that way around, not the other way. you won’t reduce risk to yourself by reading up on risk issues. it feels that way to you, because if you’re actually reading up on the world around you on a daily basis, you’re not in any kind of risky part of society.
